S T O R Y

If you want irrefutable proof that racing improves the breed, take a look at the very first 911 Turbo, presented in production form at the 1974 Paris Motor Show. It was made possible by Porsche's decision to enter Can-Am racing with the 917 in 1972 and realize that its 5-liter engine needed a little boost to be competitive against the opposition's 8-liter-plus Chevrolets. That boost was provided by the turbocharger.

Originally, the 930 Turbo's engine was to be based on the 2.7-liter unit, but tests showed that the Carrera's 3.0-liter engine was preferable, more for its better stopping performance and reduced retard than for its extra power. It was installed in the 911's already crowded engine compartment, its KKK turbo blowing at around 0.8 bar to boost power to 260 bhp. It could have had more, but Porsche limited its power mainly so as not to scare off its customers.

A "whale-tail" rear spoiler has been fitted to help evacuate more air towards the engine and create more downforce at the rear of the vehicle, and wider rear wheels with upgraded tires combined with widened wheel arches (+120mm) have been added to increase the 911's grip, making it more stable.

Each creation begins with a phase of research and documentation on the model, its origins and designer, as well as its technical aspects.

For example, the artist chose to depict the Porsche 917/30 CAN-AM, as it was this "turbocharged" technology that made the 930 turbo possible.

Alban Lerailler generally uses a Bic Medium pen or a black Polycromos pencil, which enables him to achieve fairly fine lines while varying the intensity of the colors.

It's a meticulous job, requiring great mastery to capture every detail of the Porsche 930 Turbo.

After the drawing phase, the artist scans his drawings to clean them up and lay them out using professional software.
